Dmitry V. Suslov
Deputy Director, Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies
Dmitry V. Suslov (born 1979) performs as a Deputy Director of the Center for Comprehensive European and International Studies and Senior lecturer of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the National Research University – Higher School of Economics (NRU HSE), as well as a Deputy Director for Research at the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy.
He is also expert and member of the Valdai International Discussion Club; member of the Russian International Affairs Council; member and research coordinator on the Russian side of the Working Group on the Future of the US-Russia Relations, which is a joint venture of the NRU – Higher School of Economics and Harvard University; and Principal from the NRU HSE of the University Consortium (joint venture of Harvard, Columbia, Oxford Universities, Science Po, NRU HSE and MGIMO University). In 2014-2018 he was a Program Director at the Valdai International Discussion Club.
He conducts research on various issues of World Politics and International Relations, including the US Foreign Policy and Russia-US relations, EU and Russia-EU relations, problems of European, Atlantic and Eurasian security, Russian Foreign Policy. He is a regular consultant of Russian state institutions and business enterprises on the US policies and US-Russia relations, EU-Russia relations, and European and Euro-Atlantic security issues.
At the National Research University – Higher School of Economics (School of World Economy and International Affairs) Mr. Suslov teaches courses on the US Domestic and Foreign Policy (for BA and MA students), US Foreign Policy (for MA students), Introduction to International Relations (for BA students), US-Russia Relations After the End of the Cold War (for MA students), Russia-EU Relations (for MA students), Russian Foreign Policy (for BA students) and International Security (for BA students).
He is a frequent contributor to the Valdai Club website, and publishes a lot in Russian and foreign Media. Among his latest academic works in English are “The US in a “Post-West” World: Difficulties of Adaptation and Implications for International Order and Global Governance” (2020) and “Missed Opportunities: Could a US-Russian Dialogue on Asia Pacific Have Prevented the New Cold War?” (2018). In 2019 Dr. Suslov and Sergei Karaganov co-authored a report “The New Understanding and Ways to Strengthen Multilateral Strategic Stability”, which was prepared with the support of the Russian Foreign Ministry and drew much attention in Russia and abroad.
Before joining the CFDP and the NRU-HSE, Dmitry Suslov worked as a Foreign Affairs Staff Writer for Nezavisimaya Gazeta (The Independent Newspaper) – one of the most respected federal editions in Russia.
Dr. Suslov graduated from Saint-Petersburg State University, School of International Relations (2001), and Institute of the USA and Canada, Russian Academy of Sciences (2005).
