A leading American voice on the Balkans, Edward P. Joseph brings unique experience. He served in war-time in all four conflict countries – Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo and then-Macedonia. In July, 1995, with one UN colleague, Edward coordinated the evacuation of Zepa, contemporaneous with the genocide in neighboring Srebrenica. As Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Edward negotiated the eleventh-hour breakthrough to hold Serbian national elections in independent Kosovo.
He is the author of over fifty articles, book chapters and reports. The editors of Foreign Affairs selected his article, ‘The Balkans, Interrupted’, as one of ‘The Best of the Year.’ Edward was the lead author of the SAIS-Wilson Center report, ‘From Crisis to Convergence.’ A US Army & NATO veteran and helicopter pilot, Edward co-leads the WB6 Youth Leader project, ‘Seeing is Believing.’ He teaches at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington.
