Peter Felten is an economist by profession. Having completed his university studies in Augsburg/Germany and Lyon/France, he joined the German Federal Foreign Service in 1993. He served at the German Consulate-General in Saratov/Russia, at the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and at the German Embassy in Lisbon/Portugal prior to becoming the first German Ambassador to South Sudan immediately upon South Sudan’s independence in 2011. Later he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Islamabad/Pakistan and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the German Embassy in Baghdad/Iraq.
At Headquarters in Berlin, he worked in the protocol division and on international humanitarian assistance. From 2016 to 2020 he headed the Division for Humanitarian Assistance – Policy, International Organisations and Multilateral Coordination, and served, for a three- year period, as a Member of the Advisory Group to the UN Secretary-General on the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) of the United Nations. From 2007 to 2008, Mr. Felten worked as Foreign Policy Advisor to Siemens AG, Munich. He became German Ambassador to Montenegro on 29 July, 2022.
